Rotor Pulsation Problems? The Real Issue Might Be the Hub Flange

Persistent brake pulsation problems are frustrating—but the issue may not be the rotor itself. Often, the real problem is excessive hub flange runout that transfers vibration to the rotor. Because runout can’t always be seen with the naked eye, it’s important to use a dial indicator and follow recommended inspection procedures during brake service.

Common Causes of Hub Flange Runout:

  • Curb strikes or pothole impacts
  • Over-torquing of hubs or bearings
  • Pitting or corrosion between the rotor and flange
  • Uneven or excessive lug nut torque

When Should You Replace the Hub?

If runout exceeds .005″ on a light vehicle, the flange may be out of spec. If you can’t bring runout below .002″ using standard corrections, the hub assembly or wheel bearing unit should be replaced.

PTC Hub Assembly Advantages:

  • OE design, fit, and function for smooth installation
  • Dimensional testing to ensure proper end play and reduce noise
  • Metallurgy testing to eliminate metal fatigue
  • ABS sensor testing to prevent connection issues

Technician Tip:

Use a dial indicator to check for runout at every brake job—especially when pulsation symptoms persist after rotor replacement. The damage is often hidden on the backside of the flange, where it meets the shaft and inner race.

Stop replacing rotors again and again—start with the hub. PTC has the solution inside every box.
